Jesus the Word of God

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, which is the season of preparation for Christ’s coming into the world. The coming of Jesus is described as the “Word” becoming flesh (John 1:14), and so, it is a good opportunity to meditate on what this means and what implications it has for our lives as Christians.

What does it mean that Jesus is the Word of God? In order to understand how Jesus is the Word, it is important for us to understand what a word is and what its role is.

A word is an expression of what is on the human heart or mind. God does not speak to us in mere human language. Instead, he speaks to us in another way: through his Son.

Jesus as the Word of God is the expression of what is on the heart and mind of God. He is not just any expression of God, like how we humans have many ways of expressing ourselves. Jesus is the only expression of who God is. Jesus came down into this world to reveal to us who God is, and we know that God is love. Therefore, every act and word of Jesus is a representation of who God is. The ultimate act that reveals this is the reason why Jesus came into this world: to die as a sacrifice for humanity and to give us the opportunity to die with him so that we can share in his Resurrection.

In order to receive the gift of the life of God we are all called to, we must listen attentively to the Word of God and unite ourselves with him. There are many ways we can unite ourselves with Jesus the Word of God, but one thing we should do every day is read his actual Word found in the Scriptures. By doing so, we allow the Lord to shape and guide our lives. We should also receive his Body and Blood in the Eucharist, so that we can have the life of our souls that he promises us.
